September 12; I’m excited to share the stage with “Good Day Sunshine” author Bob Kealing for an evening of lively historical storytelling and music presented by the Florida Humanities on Sept. 12 at the Ritz Theatre and Museum. This special concert marks the 60th anniversary of the Beatles’ first and only concert in Florida: the 1964 Gator Bowl concert in Jacksonville. Top Beatles tribute band, Liverpool Live, will perform songs from the same 1964 set list as well as other Beatles hits.
The Beatles made history in Jacksonville by refusing to perform to a segregated audience, making it the first integrated concert in the Southeast just months after the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Kealing and I will share historical and first-person accounts about the social climate of Florida in the ‘60s leading up to the “British Invasion,” and the historic impact of the 1964 concert.
The event starts at 7 p.m. Tickets are $20 in advance or $25 day of the show. Doors open at 6 p.m. for book sales, book signings and museum tours. Photo ops with the band will be available. Groovy attire encouraged! Get your tix at floridahumanities.org/Beatles60 or Ticketmaster.
